KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) has selected Krishna Prasad Sitaula as its candidate from Koshi Province in the National Assembly elections to be held on January 25.
The meeting of the parliamentary board of the party held on Sunday made the decision.
NC sources say Sitaula has already collected the nomination letter from party president Sher Bahadur Deuba and left for his home district, Jhapa, after holding discussions with Dr. Shekhar Koirala, who leads the anti-establishment faction of the party.
Although NC had earlier stated that it wouldn’t field candidates who faced defeat in the election for the House of Representatives, it decided to make Sitaula a candidate in the National Assembly election.
Sitaula was defeated by Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chairman Rajendra Lingden in the election for the House of Representatives in November last year.
NC sources say Deuba wants Sitaula to become the National Assembly chairman.
