Supporters of mayor, deputy mayor trade blows in Birgunj

KATHMANDU: Tensions escalated in Birgunj Sub-Metropolitan City of Parsa on Tuesday as supporters of the mayor and deputy mayor engaged in a physical altercation over the use of office space.

According to staffers of the sub-metropolis, Mayor Rajesh Mani Singh and Deputy Mayor Imtiaz Alam had conflicting opinions regarding the utilization of a specific office space.

A few days ago, Mayor Singh moved his office to a new building, prompting Chief Administrative Officer Laxmi Prasad Poudel to quickly occupy the vacated office. Meanwhile, Deputy Mayor Alam intended to move into the office recently vacated by Poudel. However, Mayor Singh insisted that the Social Security and Civil Registration Section should relocate to the vacant room instead.

After Mayor Singh objected to his plan, Deputy Mayor Alam summoned his supporters to the sub-metropolis premises. Witnessing Alam’s call to his supporters, Mayor Singh’s followers also gathered at the sub-metropolis office. They soon started fighting.

District Police Office, Parsa, deployed a large number of police personnel to take the situation under control. “The situation is now under control,” stated Deputy Superintendent of Police Kumar Bikram Thapa.
