KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has said that the UN summit on climate change, COP-28, should be taken as an opportunity for Nepal to benefit from this global event.
Speaking at a program at the Nepal pavilion on the sidelines of COP-28 in Dubai on Friday, PM Dahal said preparations were underway to establish Nepal’s rights to receive compensation for the losses and damages suffered due to climate change. “Even in the UN General Assembly, I was vocal about Nepal’s challenges in the face of the climate crisis. I raised this issue with the future generations in mind,” he recalled, adding that he also brought up this matter in discussions with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. PM Dahal said that the Secretary-General’s visit to Nepal and its mountain region has helped bring global attention to Nepal’s suffering from climate change.
He highlighted that an atmosphere was being created that acknowledges Nepal’s right to compensation in this regard. PM Dahal expressed satisfaction with Nepal being mentioned during Guterres’ speech at the COP-28 inauguration on Friday.
Emphasizing that climate change is a shared concern for all generations, he directed the Nepali team to present an effective stance during dialogues and climate negotiations.
