KATHMANDU: Nepal and Germany have signed a joint Declaration of Intent (JDoI) for strengthening bilateral relations and promoting fair and legal labor migration

Nepali ambassador to Germany Ram Kaji Khadka and Michael van der Cammen, Director of International Affairs at the German Federal Employment Agency, signed the JDoI on behalf of their respective governments on Tuesday, the Nepali Embassy in Germany said in a statement on Wednesday.

Minister for Labor, Employment and Social Security Sharat Singh Bhandari and Leonie Gebers, State Secretary (Deputy Minister) of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, of Germany were present in the signing ceremony.

“The signing of the JDol followed a bilateral meeting between a high-level Nepali delegation led by Minister Bhandari and a German delegation led by State Secretary Gebers. During the meeting, the leaders discussed various aspects of Nepal-Germany bilateral relations, focusing on skilled labor migration, Nepal’s commitment to legal migration, workers’ welfare and social security, German language and vocational training, and circular migration,” the statement added.

Both delegations expressed their happiness at the expanding relations between the two countries in recent years and emphasized that the JDoI serves as the initial step in a roadmap for fair and legal labor migration from Nepal to Germany.

“JDoI paves the way for an institutional framework to welcome skilled Nepali workers based on the requirements of the German job market,” Gebers said, adding that the recent German Skilled Immigration Act has streamlined the process of recruiting foreign skilled workers in Germany.

The Nepali delegation, led by Minister Bhandari, included Labor Secrtary Kewal Prasad Bhandari, Ambassador Khadka, and other officials from relevant Nepali ministries and the Embassy of Nepal in Berlin. The German delegation, led by Gebers, included high-ranking officials from the Federal Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs, the Federal Employment Agency, and other relevant German government departments.
