KATHMANDU: The meeting of the Parliamentary Hearing Committee of the federal parliament on Friday unanimously endorsed Hari Krishna Karki as the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court.

The Constitutional Council had recommended Acting Chief Justice Karki for the post on May 8. However, since the hearing committee hadn’t been formed at that time, the committee began the hearing on Thursday only. Karki submitted his work plan on Thursday.

On Friday, members of the committee sought Karki’s response to complaints filed against him. His appointment was endorsed unanimously after the Q&A session.

Karki has been serving as the Acting Chief Justice since the retirement of another Acting Chief Justice, Deepak Kumar Karki in October last year.

The post of Chief Justice has remained vacant since February 13, 2022, when an impeachment motion was brought against Cholendra Shumsher Rana.

Karki is retiring on August 4. Since there is a practice of chief justices taking a month-long holiday before their retirement, Karki will remain in office for less than a month.
