Parliament forms sub-committee to hold discussion on TRC bill

KATHMANDU: The Law, Justice and Human Rights Committee of the House of Representatives has formed a sub-committee to hold discussions on the transitional justice bill.

The 11-member sub-committee will have two representatives each from Nepali Congress and CPN-UMl and one representative each from the other eight parties. It has been given three weeks to hold discussions and facilitate passage of the crucial bill.

The government presented the bill to amend the Enforced Disappearances Enquiry, Truth and Reconciliation Commission Act in the House of Representatives on March 19. Although the government had prepared to pass the bill through a fast-track process, it hadn’t materialized after the opposition insisted on a detailed discussion.

The peace process began 17 years ago with the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Accord between the government and the then CPN-Maoist. Although two main goals of the peace process – management of Maoist combatants and promulgation of a new constitution have been completed, the transitional justice process still remains incomplete.
