Ruling coalition forges power-sharing deal in Gandaki

POKHARA: The ruling coalition in the Gandaki Province has forged a power-sharing understanding.

As per the understanding reached on Tuesday, Nepali Congress (NC) will get four ministries, while CPN (Maoist Center) will get two and CPN (Unified Socialist) will get one ministry.

This means Rajiv Gurung aka Deepak Manange is certain to become a minister in the province government. Manange, who won the election in Manang as an independent candidate, joined Unified Socialist after the election. He is the only member of the Unified Socialist in the provincial assembly.

The parties, however, failed to agree on the distribution of ministerial portfolios. Maoist Center has staked its claim on physical infrastructure development, and social development and health ministries. The party was also allotted two ministries in the previous government led by UML’s Khagaraj Adhikari.

Surendra Raj Pandey of NC is leading the provincial government. Pandey, who was appointed on April 27, got a vote of confidence from the province assembly on, May 4. Sushila Simkhada of Maoist Center and Sarswati Aryal Tiwari have been appointed ministers in his cabinet. But they haven’t been given any responsibility yet.
