KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress has called on the government to hold the presidential election within the scheduled timeframe.
The meeting of the party’s incumbent and former office-bearers held on Monday decided to draw the attention of the government and the Election Commission to ensure that the new President is sworn in on the day the term of the incumbent President ends, according to party’s Spokesperson Dr Prakash Sharan Mahat.
The meeting also decided to mobilize the party’s sister organizations to rally support behind the party’s candidates for the posts of President and Vice President.
Furthermore, the party also urged the Election Commission to remove any contradictions in the constitution and laws regarding the presidential election.
The term of President Bidya Devi Bhandari expires on March 13.
Speaking at the meeting, party President Sher Bahadur Deuba instructed the party leaders and sister organizations to mobilize all the party’s strength in the presidential election.
Although the ruling coalition has forged an understanding to support the candidate of CPN-UML in the presidential election, NC is hopeful of getting the support of CPN (Maoist Centre) for its candidates.
