KATHMANDU: The government has sought technical assistance from neighboring countries for forensic examinations and the management of bodies, as well as rescue operations.
Speaking at a press meet organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Saturday, Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal said the government had requested specialized technical support from neighboring countries to rescue people trapped inside disaster-affected tunnels, locate survivors, and conduct forensic examinations and manage bodies.
He said an 11-member tunnel rescue technical team from India has already been deployed, while a rescue team from China is expected to arrive soon.
Minister Khanal said Nepal has already received more than 57 tons of relief materials from India. Necessary supplies are also being received from China, Japan, Australia and other countries, he added.
Khanal said coordination with embassies in Kathmandu has been strengthened to provide information to the families of tourists and facilitate the identification and repatriation of bodies.
“We are continuously monitoring a lake formed by water accumulation from where the flood originated in coordination with Chinese authorities and the potential risks it could pose,” he said.
Khanal added that the impact of the floods has been limited to certain areas and that most of Nepal’s major tourist destinations are fully safe and open.
