825 school teachers have given up their political affiliation: Education minister

KATHMANDU: Minister for Education, Science and Technology, Sumana Shrestha, has stated that she will not back down from her decision to make the education sector free from party politics.

Speaking at a press conference organized on Tuesday to make public the achievements made during her 100 days in office, Shrestha made it clear that she will not back down from her decision and commitment as party intervention hurts the quality of education.

“We have started making appointments at universities based on merit,” she said. “A total of 825 community school teachers have given up their party memberships after the ministry asked them to sever political affiliations or step down.”

According to Shrestha, complaints were filed at the ministry against 45 community teachers who still had not given up their political affiliations. “We have sought clarifications from 41 of them, while four have been given a clean chit after the necessary investigation,” she added.
