KATHMANDU: The 19th Republic Day was celebrated at the Army Pavilion in Tundikhel on Thursday, with a special ceremony attended by President Ram Chandra Paudel, Vice President Ram Sahaya Yadav, Prime Minister Balendra Shah, Speaker Dol Prasad Aryal, former prime ministers, and other high-ranking officials.
Security agencies, including the Nepali Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force, performed a march-past during the ceremony.
President Ram Chandra Paudel addressed the gathering.
The government had requested the President to deliver the address this year after Prime Minister Shah decided not to speak at the ceremony.
Prime Ministers used to address the Republic Day ceremony until last year.
National Republic Day is marked every year on Jestha 15 as per the Nepali calendar, which falls on May 29 this year, to commemorate the abolition of the 240-year-old Shah dynasty and the declaration of Nepal as a federal democratic republic on May 28, 2008.
