KATHMANDU: Twelve Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) are vying for promotion to fill the five vacant positions of Superintendent of Police (SP) in Nepal Police.
While two positions of SPs were already unoccupied, an additional five became vacant following the promotion of five SPs to the rank of Senior Superintendent of Police (SSPs) on Friday.
Although there is a defined standard for promotion in the Nepal Police Regulations, past instances reveal that political maneuvering can influence the elevation of senior police officers. The criteria for promotion include factors such as skills, work performance, seniority, seniority during recruitment, leadership skills, and work experience.
However, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Home Affairs Narayan Kaji Shrestha has faced allegations of deviating from these standards when selecting SPs for promotion to SSPs.
DSPs Pradeep Chhetri, Angur GC, Dhakendra Khatiwada, Yadav Dhakal, Shyambabu Olia, Narayan Ranjitkar, Niranjan Dutt Bhatta, Rajan Limbu, Santosh Tamang, Ananta Sharma, Ek Narayan Koirala, and Binod Ghimire (A) are eligible for promotion to the rank of SP. The top seven ranked DSPs – Chhetri, GC, Khatiwada, Dhakal, Olia, Ranjitkar, and Bhatta – are expected to be promoted to SPs. However, other DSPs are also making efforts for promotion.
“While there are established standards for promotion, there is concern that the Inspector General (IG) may face pressure from the home minister,” noted a senior police official.
