Rs 21.75 billion worth of smartphones imported in nine months

KATHMANDU: Smartphone imports into the country increased by 16.54% over the first nine months of fiscal year 2023/24.

According to trade data of the first nine months of the current fiscal year released by the Department of Customs, Nepal imported 1,391,845 units of smartphones worth Rs 21.75 billion in the review period. The government mobilized revenue of Rs 4.04 billion from smartphone imports alone.

Such imports were worth Rs 18.66 billion over the first nine months of the previous fiscal year. During the period, 1,211,786 units of smartphones were imported into the country.

Data released by the department shows Nepal imported smartphones from 60 countries during the review period.

Nearly two-thirds of the smartphone imports were from China. According to the department, Nepal imported Rs 14.53 million worth of smartphones from China. Similarly, Rs 6.83 million worth of smartphones came from India, while Rs 3.77 million worth of smartphones came from 58 other countries.
