Youths protest Ghising’s removal from NEA

KATHMANDU: Police have arrested several protesters demonstrating near the Southern Gate of Singha Durbar – the government’s administrative center – to protest the government’s decision to sack Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Executive Director Kulman Ghising.

Various organizations and fronts affiliated with the CPN (Maoist Center) staged protests in Kathmandu opposing the decision. The Maoist Center-affiliated organizations, including, Young Communist League, protested in Kathmandu, calling the decision to remove Ghising ‘anti-people’. They changed slogans against the energy minister and the prime minister.

Maoist Center leader Ram Prasad Sapkota said that the current government has been making a series of anti-people decisions. Sapkota claimed that the decision to remove Ghising shows that the government is heading backward, forcing people to take to the streets.

Independent youth groups have also protested against Ghising’s removal. Carrying banners saying “We don’t want load shedding” and “Kulman must not be removed”, they marched from Maitighar to New Baneshwar on Tuesday. They denounced the decision to remove Ghising as autocratic and corrupt and demanded its reversal.
