Yamal breaks Pele’s record as Spain lifts fourth Euro title

KATHMANDU: Lamine Yamal entered the record books as Spain became European champions for a record fourth time with a 2-1 victory over England in Berlin early Monday morning.

Yamal became the youngest player to ever feature in a major tournament final, surpassing the record set by Pele in 1958. The Spanish forward turned 17 on Sunday, while Pele was 17 years and 249 days old when he played in the 1958 World Cup final for Brazil.

Yamal also became the first player to score or assist in the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final of a single Euro.

The youngster finished the tournament with one goal and four assists, the most assists at a single European Championship since records began in 1980, according to ESPN. He deservedly received the Young Player of the Tournament award.

Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winner in the 86th minute after substitute Cole Palmer equalized for England with a long-range finish in the 73rd minute. Spain had taken the lead within minutes of the beginning of the second half through Nico Williams.
