KATHMANDU: The World Bank has approved two new projects worth $257 million to support electricity distribution and irrigation infrastructure in Nepal.
The Electricity Supply Reliability Improvement Project, with a $120 million investment, will upgrade power distribution systems in Koshi, Bagmati, Karnali, and Sudurpashchim provinces. The Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) will implement the project, which includes new substations, network upgrades and real-time monitoring systems to improve service reliability.
Similarly, the Modernization of Rani Jamara Kulariya Irrigation Project – Phase 3, with an investment of $137 million, aims to enhance year-round irrigation services across 17,500 hectares in Kailali district. The initiative will benefit 160,000 people and support climate-resilient agriculture. It will be jointly managed by the Department of Water Resources and Irrigation, and the Department of Agriculture.
“An uninterrupted electricity supply and adequate, year-round irrigation services are fundamental inputs for Nepal’s sustainable development,” said David Sislen, World Bank Country Director for Maldives, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
