KATHMANDU: CPN-UML Vice President Subash Bikram Nembang has been making efforts to become the next President.
Nembang is preparing to stake his claim to the post if UML gets the post in a powersharing deal.
UML sources say he has already made his interest known to leaders of different political parties.
“Yes, Nembang is making efforts to become the next President from UML,” a CPN (Maoist Center) leader told Himal Press.
Nembang turned his focus toward Shital Niwas, realizing that he cannot achieve anything more at the party. Sources say Nembang is offering premiership to both Nepali Congress and Maoist Center. He believes he can become President if one of Maoist Center President Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Nepali Congress President Sher Bahadur Deuba becomes the next prime minister.
Sources say he has been telling leaders of other parties that he is the only candidate for President if UML is offered the post.
Nembang, who has served as the chairperson of the Constituent Assembly and speaker of the House of Representatives, reject the offer to become a minister in the KP Sharma Oli-led government formed after the 2017 election.
He wants to wrap up his political career by becoming the President, leaders close to Nembang say.
