ITAHARI: Wild elephants have started frequenting human settlements in Itahari Sub-Metropolitan City. Locals say herds of wild elephants have started coming to Shantinagar area in Itahari-2 on a daily basis.

The herd is believed to have entered Shantinagar area from India.

Roshan Adhikari, a local of the area said, local people are spending sleepless nights after wild elephants started frequenting the area. According to Adhikari, a herd of around a dozen elephants with calves have been coming to the area for the past three days.

“The herd enters the settlement at around 7 pm. Chasing elephants has become a part of our daily life. We remain awake till 4 am on some nights,” he added.

While local people are spending sleepless nights, the local government has remained a mute spectator, he added. “We are in a difficult situation as most of the streetlights don’t work,” he said, adding: “We have informed both the local government and police administration.”

Dhruba Nepal, another local of Shantinagar area, said about 100 villagers have been keeping vigil from 10 pm every day. “We have managed to prevent loss of life and property so far. The local administration must step up now,” he added.
