Water released in Lamki canal of Rani Jamara Kulariya project

DHANGADHI: The Rani Jamara Kulariya Irrigation Project has begun testing the Lamki extension canal.

The project Friday released water in the extension canal from the main canal, according to the project office.

The national pride project went into implementation in 2011 with the objective of modernizing three traditional irrigation canals – Rani, Jamara and Kulariya – in the eastern area of Kailali district.

The project built the 14.65-kilometer long Lamki extension canal to provide irrigation facilities to a large swathe of arable land. The Lamki canal extends from the main canal at Dundejhari to Pathariya River. About 6 km stretch of the canal has a concrete structure.

According to Prem Lasiwa, information officer at the project office, the extension canal will irrigate 6,000 hectares of land in three wards of Lamki Chuha Municipality.

The project awarded the extension canal works to Kalika/Kumar JV in 2016, giving the joint venture a two-year deadline. But it took the company four years on top of the given two-year timeframe to complete the project.

According to the project office, 2,688 trees were cut down to build the extension canal. Similarly, it provided Rs 850 million to distribute compensation for land acquired for the project.
