KATHMANDU: The United States has welcomed the appointment of Sushila Karki as the Prime Minister of Nepal’s interim government.
Issuing a statement on Sunday, the US Embassy in Kathmandu said it welcomed the restoration of calm and peaceful resolution after last week’s tragic events. “We commend President Ram Chandra Paudel and youth leaders for their commitment to a democratic solution, even as we continue to mourn with Nepal over its losses,” the statement read.
The US has also acknowledged the role of the Nepal Army in stabilizing the situation. “We recognize the Nepali Army and Chief of Army Staff General Ashok Raj Sigdel for their vital role in restoring order and facilitating a peaceful transition of civilian government,” it noted.
The US has said that it looks forward to working with the interim government in the coming months as Nepal prepares for new elections.
