KATHMANDU: Uruguay defeated Brazil 4-2 in a penalty shootout to book its spot in the 2024 Copa America semifinals.
With this victory, Uruguay joins defending champions Argentina, first-time semifinalist Canada, and Colombia in the final four.
The match went to extra time after both sides failed to score in the regulation 90 minutes. Brazil struggled to create opportunities, even though Uruguay was down to 10 men late in the second half after Nahitan Nandez was sent off.
Uruguayan keeper Sergio Rochet saved Eder Militao’s penalty, and Douglas Luiz hit the post, giving Uruguay the upper hand in the shootout. Although Alisson Becker denied José María Giménez, Manuel Ugarte converted his side’s fifth penalty to prevent any Brazilian comeback in the shootout.
Argentina plays Canada in the first semifinal on Wednesday, while Uruguay takes on Colombia in the second semifinal on Thursday.
