Uruguay defeats Canada on penalties to finish third in Copa America

KATHMANDU: Uruguay beat Canada on penalties in the third-place playoff match of the 2024 Copa America on Sunday morning.

Canada, which was on course to create history with a first-ever third-place finish in the tournament, conceded a 92nd-minute equalizer and then lost 4-3 on penalties.

Rodrigo Bentancur gave Uruguay the lead in the eighth minute. Ismaël Koné scored with a scissor kick to level the scores 14 minutes later. Canada deservedly took the lead in the 80th minute when Jonathan David pounced on a rebound to score past the Uruguayan keeper. But Luis Suárez scored his 69th goal in national colors in injury time to take the match to the tie-breaker.

Federico Valverde, Rodrigo Bentancur, Giorgian De Arrascaeta, and Luis Suárez scored their penalties. However, Ismaël Koné’s tame shot was saved by Uruguayan keeper Sergio Rochet, while Alphonso Davies’s penalty hit the bar.

Jonathan David, Moïse Bombito, and Mathieu Choinière scored their penalties for Canada.

Defending champions Argentina takes on Colombia in the final of 2024 Copa America in Miami on Monday morning.
