KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal has instructed Nepali ambassadors to work while upholding the interests of Nepali workers.
Addressing a meeting with ambassadors at the Office of the Prime Minister on Tuesday, Dahal drew the attention of the ambassadors toward problems being faced by Nepalis on foreign land.
This is the first time that the Dahal-led government called Nepali ambassadors stationed abroad to Kathmandu for discussions.
In the meeting, the ambassadors presented their reports as well as their future plans of action.
In his address, Dahal asked the ambassadors to focus on strengthening diplomatic relations, promoting tourism, and upholding the interests of migrant Nepali workers. “I believe that this type of discussion will contribute significantly to the safe and dignified migration of Nepali workers,” Dahal added.
Stating that foreign employment has helped the country’s youth employment in this difficult situation, Dahal said that the country was benefiting from capital, skills, and technology through overseas employment opportunities.
“But Nepali workers going for foreign jobs are facing problems such as being cheated by agents, not being able to exercise their rights, and being exposed to various risks at the workplace. These are the issues that we need to tackle,” Dahal told the ambassadors.
He also called upon the ambassadors to actively pursue labor diplomacy to protect the rights and interests of Nepali workers, ensuring that they aren’t denied social security and minimum facilities guaranteed by law.
“We have seen instances of Nepali missions not addressing grievances of Nepalis when they encounter problems in foreign lands. I direct the ambassadors, and all agencies under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security to be serious and active in safeguarding the rights and interests of Nepalis,” he added.
