KATHMANDU: Upendra Yadav, the chairman of the Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP), is planning a strategy to become a member of the House of Representatives.
According to sources, Yadav is urging the seven-party coalition to award the position of Vice President to his party as part of the power-sharing agreement. If this happens, Yadav intends to nominate Ramsahaya for the post. To contest the election, Ramsahaya will have to resign which will vacate the Bara-2 constituency. Yadav plans to contest the re-election in Bara-2 constituency and become the party’s parliamentary party leader.
The two largest parties of the coalition – CPN-UML and CPN (Maoist Center) – have agreed in principle to share the posts of the President and Vice President among themselves. But JSP is saying that it should get the position of Vice President. JSP is saying that it should get the position of Vice President. Party sources Yadav’s real intention behind this is to appoint Ramsahaya Vice President, contest re-election in his constituency and become the party’s parliamentary party leader.

Yadav appointed his close confidant Ramsahaya Prasad Yadav as JSP’ parliamentary party, bypassing Vice Chairman Ashok Rai who leads an anti-establishment faction within the party. Rai’s election as the parliamentary party leader would have limited Yadav’s role in the party.
The JSP chairperson is seen as a great strategist not only in Madhesh, but in the national political scene as well. He rose in Nepali politics by leading the Madhesh Movement which erupted in the southern plains of the country as people took to the streets to express their dissent to the interim constitution of 2007.
Yadav formed an electoral alliance with CPN-UML in the November 20 election at the eleventh hour, ditching the five-party coalition. But his party had a poor showing in the election. Yadav himself was defeated by Janamat Party’s CK Raut.
The JSP Chairman has been blaming the UML for his party’s poor performance in the election.
