KATHMANDU: The 62nd Annual Report of the Office of the Auditor General for fiscal year 2023/24 has uncovered significant financial discrepancies across government offices in fiscal year 2023/24, amounting to Rs 91.59 billion in unsettled spending. With this, the cumulative outstanding irregularity has reached  Rs 733.19 billion.

The cumulative outstanding irregularity till fiscal year 2022/23 stood at Rs 669.86 billion.

The report, which audited spending by 5,759 government entities made in 2023/24, found Rs 30.12 billion in spending to be recovered, Rs 56.12 billion to be regularized and Rs 5.34 billion in outstanding advances.

Federal government offices recorded the highest share of financial mismanagement, with a total of Rs 47.74 billion in unsettled spending. This includes Rs 18.33 billion in spending to be recovered, Rs 27.92 billion in spending to be regularized and Rs 1.48 billion in outstanding advances.

Local governments followed with Rs 25.32 billion in total discrepancies, comprising Rs 3.50 billion in spending to be recovered, Rs 19.39 billion in spending to be regularized and Rs 2.24 billion in outstanding advances.

Agencies under provincial governments accounted for Rs 4.2 billion, which included Rs 768 million in spending to be recovered, Rs 2.80 billion in spending to be regularized and and Rs 626 million in outstanding advances.

The remaining Rs 14.33 billion was attributed to various committees and other offices.
