BUTWAL: CPN-UML’s Lila Giri has been appointed as the Chief Minister of Lumbini Province.
Province Chief Amik Sherchan appointed Giri to the post as per Article 168 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal, 2015.
Giri had made the claim to form government on Wednesday morning with the support of 58 assembly members. Parties need 44 members to form government in the 87-member province assembly.
He has the support of assembly members from CPN (Maoist Center), Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), Janata Samajbadi Party (JSP), Loktantrik Samajbadi Party (LSP) and Nagarik Unmukti Party as well as two independent assembly members, according to UML central committee member Bhumishwar Dhakal.
Maoist leaders say that the Maoist Center has reached an understanding with UML to lead the province government on a rotating basis.
Who is Giri?
Born in 1954 in Gulmi district, Giri is involved in the communist movement for nearly five decades. He worked with party’s farmer’s and teacher’s wings in the past. Giri became a district committee member of CPN-UML after the political change of 1990. He rose through the party ranks and served as the party’s district committee president between 2010 and 2013.
Giri was elected as the central committee member of the party by the 9th general convention held in 2014. He was elected as the politburo member by the 10th general convention of the party held in 2021. He also served as minister in the province government led by Shankar Prasad Pokharel. Giri was elected to the province assembly from Rupandehi-2(A).
