KATHMANDU: CPN-UML has withdrawn its support from Pushpa Kamal Dahal-led government. UML ministers submitted their resignations to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal on Wednesday evening.

The ministers reached Prime Minister Dahal’s official residence in Baluwatar after attending a briefing at UML Chairperson’s residence in Balkot. This means Dahal will now have to undergo a floor test within 30 days.

The Nepali Congress (NC) and UML reached an understanding on Monday to form a new government.

A meeting of UML’s Secretariat had requested Prime Minister Dahal to step down and pave the way for a new government by Wednesday.

Since Dahal did not step down, UML ministers tendered their resignations, said Minister of Law, Justice, and Parliamentary Affairs, Padma Giri. “We were expecting the Prime Minister to step down given the changed political context in the country. But since it didn’t happen, we are stepping down,” Giri said. “This is as per the decision taken by our Secretariat meeting.”

Raghubir Mahaseth led UML in the coalition government as Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Physical Infrastructure and Transport. Along with Mahaseth and Giri, six other UML lawmakers were in the coalition government.
