KATHMANDU: CPN-UML is fielding candidates for all 19 seats in the National Assembly elections to be held on January 25.

Speaking at the party’s Secretariat Committee meeting on Friday, General Secretary Shankar Pokharel informed that the party will field candidates for all 19 seats.

UML’s provincial committees have recommended three candidates for each seat. “We have already held discussions on the names recommended by the lower committees. Further discussions are needed on candidates recommended for some clusters,” Pokharel added.

Twenty seats, including one to be appointed by the President on the recommendation of the Council of Ministers, in the National Assembly are becoming vacant on March 4. The Election Commission is holding a vote on January 25 to fill 19 of the 20 posts.

The ruling coalition of the Nepali Congress, CPN (Maoist Center), and some fringe parties have already decided to field common candidates in the election.

Meanwhile, the Secretariat Committee has nominated six party leaders to the Central Committee. According to Pokharel, Tulasi Neupane, Keshav Pandey, Damodar Bhandari, Ram Avatar Yadav, Binod Shah, and Deepak Karki have been nominated to the Central Committee.

Five of them, except Karki, previously served as the chairman of the party’s provincial committees. Karki is the former chairman of the Jhapa District Committee of UML.
