UML General Secretary Pokharel objects to Dahal’s ‘undemocratic’ statement

SURKHET: CPN-UML General Secretary Shankar Pokharel has objected to the ‘undemocratic’ statement by CPN (Maoist Center) Pushpa Kamal Dahal who allegedly suggested leading the country down the path of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh after being out of power.

Pokharel made these accusations at a press meet in Surkhet Airport on Thursday. “Dahal’s extremist views are causing various forms of instability,” he said. “The parliamentary process has been disrupted due to the unparliamentary politics of the opposition leader. As the leader of the main opposition, he shouldn’t have cited examples of Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. That can’t be considered democratic.”

Pokharel clarified that their intention was not to advocate for a two-party system, but rather to suggest that two parties with different ideologies would be sufficient. “I have not proposed a two-party system; I only said two parties would be sufficient for the country’s stability and development. In America, two parties have been competing for hundreds of years. In Britain, there are other parties, but competition primarily occurs between two parties,” Pokharel explained. “In Nepal, with divided public opinion, I suggested that two strong parties would be enough, not many parties. The main ideological divide is between reformed capitalism and socialism.”

Pokharel also dismissed claims that two general secretaries of the Nepali Congress are dissatisfied with the government.
