KATHMANDU: The ruling party CPN-UML has finalized candidates for 33 local government positions in the upcoming by-elections scheduled for December 1.

The party’s Secretariat Committee meeting held on Saturday approved the names recommended by lower committees.

The Election Commission is holding the by-elections on December 1 for to fill 44 different positions in local governments across the country. Two positions of District Coordination Committee Chairperson, one mayor and one deputy mayor of municipalities, two chairpersons and four deputy chairpersons of rural municipalities and 34 ward chairpersons are lying vacant.

According to UML’s Deputy General Secretary Pradeep Gyawali, candidates for the remaining positions will be finalized within a few days.

Gyawali said that candidates are yet to be finalized for ward chairs of Molung Rural Municipality-5, Okhaldhunga; Triyuga Municipality-12, Udaypur; Sirijanga Rural Municipality-3, Taplejung; Dakneswhori Municipality-1 and 4, Saptari; Ward Chair of Dhanusha Municipality-1, Dhanusha; and Mahabu Rural Municipality, Dailekh.

Additionally, UML has stated that one of Durganath Bohora or Lakhi Chand Bohora will be nominated as the candidate for Ward Chair of Surma Rural Municipality-1 of Bajhang.
