UML decides to use portraits of only Oli in party programs

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML’s five-point criteria for its party-related public programs have raised concerns and criticism. One of the criteria, taken by the meeting of the party’s Secretariat Committee held on Monday, restricts the use of any photo other than that of the party chair during public events organized by party committees and affiliated organizations.

UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli announced the standards at a program organized by the party’s Industry and Commerce on Wednesday.

This move has ignited a debate about the party’s approach to inclusivity and democracy within its ranks. Critics argue that such a restriction sends a concerning message, hinting at an authoritarian stance rather than fostering an environment of diversity and open dialogue.

The party has also decided that only event speakers are allowed on the stage. Likewise, the party has decided to discourage unnecessary extravagance and distribution of items like badges, garlands, and shawls to the guests.

UML Deputy General Secretary Bishnu Rimal said the decisions will now be circulated to party units.
