UML announces nine-point program to protest Oli’s arrest

KATHMANDU: CPN-UML has announced a nine-point protest program, opposing the arrest of party Chairperson KP Sharma Oli.

A meeting of the party’s Secretariat held on Tuesday decided to organize gatherings and demonstrations against the government down to the local level.

UML Secretary Mahesh Basnet said in a social media post that the meeting condemned government repression through the police against peaceful protests staged against the “revenge-driven” arrest of Oli and former home minister Ramesh Lekhak.

According to the decisions, the party will hold district-level gatherings focused on the movement till April 8, stage protests in all municipalities on April 11, organize ward-level meetings on April 16, and hold demonstrations in provincial capitals on April 20. Similarly, the party has planned a mass protest in Kathmandu on April 25.

They also decided that all sister organisations of the party would organize protest programs in their own ways.

Meanwhile, the party has called a meeting of the party’s mass organizations coordination mechanism for 11 am on Wednesday.

The meeting also assigned vice-chair Raghuji Pant, deputy general secretary Yogesh Bhattarai, and central committee member Min Bahadur Shahi to lead an all-party civic dialogue initiative.

Similarly, vice-chairperson Ram Bahadur Thapa and secretary Padma Aryal have been tasked with coordinating with other parties in Parliament and ensuring effective presentation.
