Ujyalo Nepal’s merger with RSP collapses

KATHMANDU: The unification of Ujyalo Nepal Party (UNP) and the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has officially failed.

Following the collapse of the unity process, Ujyalo Nepal convened an emergency meeting of its Central Committee on Saturday. The meeting appointed Kulman Ghising as the party’s new Chairperson, while founding chairperson Anup Kumar Upadhyay was named patron of the party.

Speaking after the meeting, Ghising said that although there was broad agreement on the need for new political forces to unite in line with public aspirations, the consensus reached during talks could not be translated into action.

According to him, issues related to inclusivity, federalism, and supplementary agreements ultimately derailed the merger.

Ujyalo Nepal leaders have claimed that the RSP unilaterally announced that the unification agreement had fallen apart.

Meanwhile, RSP Chairperson Rabi Lamichhane on Saturday briefed party leaders about the talks with Ghising.

Party sources said the RSP secretariat has decided not to endorse the merger agreement.
