KATHMANDU: A television journalist covering Friday’s pro-monarchy protest from a house in Tinkune, Kathmandu, died after protesters set the building on fire.
The deceased has been identified as Suresh Rajak, a cameraperson for Avenues Television.
Avenues Television confirmed Rajak’s death during a live broadcast.
“Rajak was capturing footage from the roof of the building. Pro-monarchy demonstrators set the building on fire stating that police had occupied the building. Rajak was burned alive in the incident. Following the fire, authorities recovered his severely charred remains from the building. Police confirmed the body was found in an unrecognizable state due to the extensive burns,” Avenues TV wrote.
The Tinkune area remained tense throughout the day after pro-monarchy protesters clashed with police, who prevented them from marching toward the New Baneshwar area. Sabin Maharjan (29) of Kirtipur died after receiving a police bullet earlier in the day.
