KATHMANDU: The country’s largest and oldest university, Tribhuvan University (TU), is now without a leader as the government has accepted the resignation tendered by its Vice Chancellor, Prof Dr Kesha Jung Baral.
Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli, who is also the Chancellor of TU, approved Baral’s resignation on Thursday. Oli, however, has not named the acting vice-chancellor to discharge responsibilities until a new vice-chancellor is appointed. According to the Tribhuvan University Act, the rector can serve as the vice-chancellor for three months while the recommendation committee is formed to select the new vice-chancellor. However, the process to name the new vice-chancellor has not been started.
Baral was appointed to the position by the previous government led by Pushpa Kamal Dahal of CPN (Maoist Center) on February 22 last year. He tendered his resignation on March 28, citing health issues. However, TU officials close to him say Baral stepped down due to a lack of cooperation from the government.
