KATHMANDU: Singer and actor Prashant Tamang passed away on Sunday morning due to a heart attack. He was 43.
Tamang’s close associate Rajesh Ghatani confirmed in a social media post that Tamang died at his residence in New Delhi.
Born in Darjeeling, India, in 1983, Tamang was the winner of Indian Idol Season 3. After winning the title in 2007, he went on to sing dozens of songs in both Nepali and Hindi. He remade Nepali cult classic Chhujang Dukpa’s Asare Mahinama, which was immensely popular. His songs, including Jaula Relaima Sarara, Man Saili, Sirima Siri, Rato Rani, and Aafnailai Ta Ghat Garda, were liked by audiences.
Chief Minister of India’s West Bengal state, Mamata Banerjee, said she was saddened by the sudden and untimely demise of Prashant Tamang. “His roots in our Darjeeling hills and one-time association with Kolkata Police made him particularly dear to us in Bengal. I convey my condolences to his family, friends, and countless followers,” she wrote in a post on X.

Singer Pratap Das said Prashant’s name is the first to come to mind when people talk about Idol. Paying tribute to Tamang on his Facebook page, he wrote, “When you say Idol, the first name that comes to mind is Prashant Tamang. The news that he is no longer with us has caused deep pain. May his soul rest in peace.”
Prashant was not only a singer but also an actor. He rose to fame with his debut film ‘Gorkha Paltan’. Films such as Pardeshi, Angalo Yo Mayako, Nishani, and Pardeshi 2 further strengthened his identity as an actor.
Tamang is survived by his wife and a daughter. He lived in New Delhi with his family. True to his name, Prashant was known for his calm and simple nature. Many have described his death as shocking and hard to believe.
Composer and film director Narayan Rayamajhi wrote emotionally, “Oh God, may all this news be false.”
Singer and composer Pramod Kharel called it an unpleasant and unbelievable loss, writing, “What an unbearable and shocking piece of news. Dear Prashant Tamang is no longer among us. May he find a place in heaven.”
Comedian Dinesh Kafle remembered Tamang as a calm and humble person. Recalling that he had worked with him on stage twice, Kafle wrote, “Brother Prashant Tamang—calm and simple by nature, with no arrogance at all. Those moments will never be forgotten.”
Actress Pooja Sharma paid tribute by recalling “Asare Mahinama.” She wrote, “Asare Mahinama pani paryo rujhaune… It’s so hard to believe, dai. May you rest in heaven. We will remember you.”
Singer Mechu Dhimal said Tamang’s death is a major loss to the artistic community. “A huge loss… may Prashant dai find peace,” she wrote on Facebook.
Singer Aastha Raut said his death is a sad moment for all Nepalis. Recalling a program she had performed with him, she described him as a peaceful person with a humorous nature.
Comedian Manoj Gajurel said Tamang’s art had united Nepali-speaking people across the world. In a social media post, Gajurel said the community would remember him for generations. “Not knowing where Prashant Tamang was or how he was doing in recent times feels like a big mistake,” Gajurel wrote. “The sudden news of his passing has left me devastated. It makes you realize how important it is to stay in touch with friends and loved ones.”
Gajurel also recalled collaborations with Tamang. “Our collaborations in shows across Nepal and our three-month tour in the UK will always remain in my memory. Heartfelt tribute, dear Prashant. You united Nepali-speaking people worldwide through your art, and they will remember you for generations.”
In recent years, Tamang had been working in Indian films and web series. He earned praise for his role in the Indian web series Paatal Lok Season 2. He had recently completed shooting for his next project – Salman Khan’s film Battle of Galwan – which releases in April.
