KATHMANDU: The trailer of the documentary ‘Zero to 8848’, which captures a fascinating and historic journey from Kachankawal in Jhapa — Nepal’s lowest point — to the summit of Mount Everest, has been released. The trailer was unveiled on Monday at One Cinemas, New Baneshwar.
Jointly directed by Niranjan Pandey and Balram Budhathoki, the documentary is based on a concept by journalist Prem Baniya. It portrays the stories, determination and challenges faced by climbers en route to Everest.
Along with Baniya, the film features renowned mountaineer Tendi Sherpa, who has climbed Everest 18 times, world cyclist Pushkar Shah, climber and writer Conrad Anker, Ang Pasang Sherpa, and others.
Starting from Kachankawal, the journey passes through Kanyam and Shree Antu in Ilam, Namje and Hile in Dhankuta, the Mundhum Trail in Bhojpur, Halesi in Khotang, Okhaldhunga, Paatle and Salleri in Solukhumbu, then through Bupsa, Thamdanda, Surke, Phakding, Manjo, Namche Bazaar, Khumjung, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, Gorakshep, and finally Kala Patthar and Base Camp. From there, the climb proceeds to Camp I, Camp II, Camp III, Camp IV (South Col), Hillary Step, and ultimately reaches the summit.
“This is not just a documentary; it is a commitment to showcase our country,” said Prem Baniya. “Through this, we propose the concept of excavating Kachankawal — which lies 58 metres above sea level — to sea level, creating a village from where the journey to Everest can begin. This represents a proud moment in Nepal’s history and marks the beginning of a fascinating new chapter globally. Our goal is to realise this vision.”
The summit footage of Everest was captured by Sujan Gurung and Doji Sherpa, who both reached the peak for the shoot.
