Trailer of Nepali climber Lhakpa Sherpa’s Netflix film launched

KATHMANDU: Netflix has released the trailer of a documentary film about the record-setting Nepali climber Lhakpa Sherpa.

“Mountain Queen: The Summits of Lhakpa Sherpa” is directed by Lucy Walker, a two-time Oscar nominee. Netflix acquired the worldwide rights to the film in September last year. The film will be released on July 31.

The film tells the story of Nepali climber Lhakpa Sherpa, who has summited Mt. Everest a record 10 times. She is also the first Nepali woman to summit Mt. Everest and safely return.

The first Nepali woman to summit Mt. Everest was Pasang Lhamu Sherpa who died while descending from the summit in 1993.

The documentary follows the remarkable woman who had to pretend to be a boy to secure her first job in the Himalayas—and hasn’t stopped fighting since, The Guardian has written about the film.

The film documents the extraordinary life of the 48-year-old single mother of two daughters who, despite being a record-setting climber, works in a supermarket in the US for a living.

Lhakpa first reached the summit of Mt. Everest in 2000 as part of the Nepali Women Millennium Expedition. She subsequently climbed the mountain in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2016, 2017, and 2018. She raised the money for her 10th summit in 2022 through crowdfunding.

“Mountain Queen” is the second Netflix film based on the Nepal Himalayas after “14 Peaks: Nothing Is Impossible.”
