
KATHMANDU: Tinkune area of Kathmandu became tense on Friday during a protest organized by pro-monarchy supporters.
Police fired tear gas after demonstrators tried to break through barricades at the Bagmati Bridge, from where the restricted area begins. Authorities also deployed water cannons to disperse the crowd.
Protesters reportedly pelted stones at local homes and buildings. A picture shared on social media shows all the glass panes of a commercial building shattered. A tear gas canister was also fired near the stage set up for the rally. Protesters also smashed glass panes of five taxis and set fire on few houses.
The pro-monarchy demonstrators took to the streets demanding that Nepal be declared a Hindu kingdom again. They chanted slogans like “Long live the monarchy!” and “Down with the republic!”, among others.
Meanwhile, the Socialist Front began its assembly at Bhrikutimandap in the capital. CPN (Maoist Centre) Chairperson Pushpa Kamal Dahal, CPN (Unified Socialist) Chairperson Madhav Kumar Nepal, Maoist Centre Senior Vice Chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha, and CPN General Secretary Netra Vikram Chand ‘Biplav’, among others, are scheduled to address the event.
