TIA Gold Haul: RSP registers motion of urgent public importance

KATHMANDU: Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) has registered a motion of urgent public importance for discussion on the recent 100-kg gold haul at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).

In the motion registered at the Federal Parliament Secretary on Wednesday, the RSP has expressed grave concerns about the incident, which has raised serious questions about the effectiveness of customs inspection and the overall system at TIA. The party highlighted that this scam has exposed violations of the Nepal Rastra Bank’s regulations, and it could potentially impact the country’s economy, thereby questioning the efficiency of the entire TIA system.

The primary objectives of this motion are to request the government to initiate a thorough investigation into how such a large amount of gold managed to pass through customs without detection, to inquire about the measures being taken to combat organized gold smuggling, and to demand a work plan for preventing similar incidents in the future.

Furthermore, the RSP said the discussion will focus on government efforts to regulate gold imports as per the regulations put in place by the central bank,  study the government’s investigation report on previous gold hauls, and efforts made by the government to control gold smuggling, among others.

According to the party, the motion stands as a crucial step toward ensuring accountability, transparency, and proper measures to safeguard the nation’s interests, economy, and security.
