KATHMANDU: Noted businessperson Deepak Malhotra has claimed that he was not involved in any illegal activity.
Organizing a press meet in Kathmandu on Thursday, after some media reports linked his name to the gold seized outside the Tribhuvan International Airport Customs Office on Wednesday, Malhotra said there is no truth in the claims made by some media outlets.
“I am in no way involved in that gold importation,” Malhotra said. “I am not engaged in any illegal activities. All my business organizations are operating in a transparent manner.”
He also asserted that he has no involvement with people arrested by the police with the gold.
The Department of Revenue Investigation impounded a large quantity of gold smuggled via Tribhuvan International Airport on Wednesday. Officials estimate that the confiscated gold could weigh around one quintal, which, based on Wednesday’s gold price, is worth Rs 969 million.
