KATHMANDU: Prime Minsiter KP Sharma Oli has said that those not following the constitution and democratic system are the ones obstructing parliament.
Referring indirectly to the ongoing obstruction and boycott of the House of Representatives by the Rastriya Swatantra Party, Oli said, “Even when there is full freedom to speak within the bounds of the constitution and law, using that space to attack the very system is wrong.”
He made the comment while unveiling a book written by former Chief Election Commissioner Surya Prasad Shrestha in Kathmandu on Sunday.
Although democracy, as a system, is not flawed, Oli said some negative tendencies had emerged in its implementation. “There are weaknesses in the process that must be corrected,” he added. “In a democratic system, the government is accountable and answerable to the people. It is not a ruler — it is a manager and a servant,” Oli said.
Oli said the goal of the current government is good governance and prosperity. “If no one turns anarchic, there is no need for the government to constantly enforce the law. But if anarchy surfaces, the law must take its course.”
