KATHMANDU: Several actresses, who had stepped away from acting, have made their return to the screen this year through films and television series. Prominent actresses such as Pooja Chand, Bipana Thapa, Rejina Upreti and Richa Ghimire have reconnected with audiences after a decade-long hiatus. Despite disappearing from the screen due to changes in film presentation and narrative styles, they have successfully made a comeback.
Actress Rejina Upreti, who was last seen in the film Bardan a decade ago, marked her comeback with Modibeni which was released in August. She had distanced herself from films due to the rise of digital filmmaking. Her comeback has sparked a trend of veteran actresses returning to cinema.
Bipana Thapa made her big-screen return with Hrashwa Deergha which premiered on November 15. Although she had been planning a comeback for some time, she said the right circumstances gave her the confidence to proceed. “I stayed away from the industry for a long time due to family reasons. Now, I’ve returned, and it feels like working on my first film all over again. The filming experience cannot be described in words,” Thapa shared. “We once played lead roles, but now we often appear in supporting roles. Regardless of the role, it must leave an impact on the overall story. I am committed to continuing my acting journey.”
Similarly, Pooja Chand, who returned to acting with Tel Visa on November 23, has been garnering good praise. Audiences and filmmakers have responded positively, saying she has done justice to the role of actor Bipin Karki’s wife. This suggests she might be seen in future films as well.
Actress Richa Ghimire has also returned to acting and film production through Tel Visa. “I went abroad because of film work. It took time to return due to the lifestyle and living conditions there. But I have returned to the industry again. I will now continue this,” said Ghimire.
Like Ghimire, Arunima Lamsal, who now resides in the US, is making her comeback with the web series Ghar: But in America.
