Thame flood obstructs Everest Base Camp trail

KATHMANDU: A sudden flood in the Thame River on Friday afternoon has washed away sections of the popular Everest Base Camp trail.

Sub Inspector Hem Bahadur Katwal of Nepal Police told RSS news agency that the flood swept away approximately 100 meters of the trail in two locations between Phakding and Namche Bazaar.

The nearly two-week-long Everest Base Camp trek begins from the Lukla airstrip and passes through Phakding, Monjo, Namche Bazaar, Tengboche, Dingboche, Lobuche, and Gorakshep before reaching the Everest Base Camp.

The flood in the Thame River also devastated the picturesque Thame village, located about a three-hour walk from Namche Bazaar. Although no loss of life has been reported, the flood destroyed 12 houses and lodges, one hospital, and one school.

The Department of Hydrology and Meteorology suspects that the flood was caused by the outburst of one of the six glacial lakes in the Thame River watershed area.
