Thame flood: 12 houses, one school, one clinic swept

KATHMANDU: A sudden flood in Thame River washed away 12 houses one school and a clinic operated by Himalayan Trust in Thame village in Khumbu Region of Solukhumbu district on Friday afternoon.

According to the Nepal Army, eight houses have sustained damages, while one person has gone missing after the incident.

“There is no report of any casualty yet,” Major Navaraj Basnet of Salleri barrack of Nepal Army told Republica over the phone. “Initial reports suggest that a tributary of Thame River, which was blocked by a landslide for some time, breached its edges, and caused flooding. However, we can not say for sure what caused the flood.”

Although not on the popular Everest Base Camp trek, Thame is a popular stopover for tourists in the Khumbu Region. It is a starting or ending point of the popular Three Passes trek and is a mere three hours from Namche Bazaar.

Thame River meets the Imja River below Namche Bazaar to form Dudhkoshi – a major tributary of the Koshi River which flows into the Ganges.
