Thailand defends low total, beats Netherlands by 17 runs for third win

KATHMANDU: Thailand registered its third straight win in the Nepal Women’s T20 Tri-series, defeating the Netherlands by 17 runs in a low-scoring fixture at the TU International Cricket Ground in Kathmandu on Monday.

Batting first, Thailand was bundled out for a paltry 86 runs in 19.5 overs. Chasing 87 to record its third win in the series, the Netherlands was all out for 69 runs in 15.5 overs.

Thailand made a poor start with the bat as its top-order failed for the first time in the series. Openers Nattaya Boochatham and Aphisara Suwanchonrathi were out for 1 and 8, respectively, while Nannapat Koncharoenkai, who scored unbeaten 56 and 60 in her last two matches, fell for five runs. Chanida Sutthiruang top-scored for Thailand with a 28-ball 27, while Phannita Maya scored 12. Other Thai batters failed to reach double digits as Thailand settled for the lowest score of 86 so far in the series.

Iris Zwilling, Eva Lynch and Silver Siegers claimed two wickets each for the Netherlands, while Isabel van der Woning chipped in with a wicket.

Thai bowlers, however, stepped up when their batters failed, putting the Netherlands in trouble early in the chase. Openers Phebe Molkenboer and Sterre Kalis were out for seven each. Although Captain Babette de Leede scored 25 off 21 balls, two successive ducks put pressure on Dutch batters. Iris Zwilling scored 13 from 30 balls, and Caroline de Lang contributed 10 from 12 balls.

Thipatcha Putthawong and Onnicha Kamchomphu took three wickets each for Thailand. Chanida Sutthiruang claimed two, and Nattaya Boochatham contributed one wicket.

Thailand earlier defeated Nepal by four wickets and the Netherlands by eight wickets.

Nepal will take on Thailand in the next match of the series on Tuesday.
