KATHMANDU: Teachers across the country organized a massive protest in Kathmandu in response to a call by the Confederation of Nepali Teachers (CNT), demanding the early passage of the School Education Bill from parliament.
The Bill is currently under consideration in the Education, Health, and Information Technology Committee of the House of Representatives. Teachers are disappointed with the government and political parties as the winter session of parliament recently ended without passing the Bill. Officials of the CNT claim that leaders had expressed commitment to enacting the Bill during the winter session.
The CNT has urged the government to approve the Bill in line with past agreements and understandings with the CNT. The protest will continue until the Bill is enacted into law, officials say.
Laxmi Kishor Subedi, president of the CNT, said that the Bill must be enacted even by issuing an ordinance if necessary.
Teachers have said that the protest will continue until their demands are addressed.
