Suspension of NC lawmaker Tek Bahadur Gurung lifted

KATHMANDU: The Supreme Court has lifted the suspension of Nepali Congress (NC) lawmaker Tek Bahadur Gurung.

A division bench of Justices Manoj Kumar Sharma and Binod Sharma issued an order to lift the suspension of House of Representatives member Gurung, according to SC Spokesperson Bed Prasad Upreti.

“The petitioner had demanded the apex court order to lift suspension, arguing that he was a people’s representative and that he had not committed any offense,” Upreti said. “The order has been issued as demanded by the petitioner.”

The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had filed a charge sheet against Gurung at the Special Court on February 4, 2019. He was accused of causing loss to the state by leasing government land in Fun Park, Bhrikuti Mandap, to a private party at a lower price.

Gurung was elected to the lower house from Manang district in the general election held in November 2022. He was suspended on December 27, 2022, after the CIAA notified the Federal Parliament Secretariat about the charges against him.

The Special Court had sentenced Gurung to nine years in jail on March 20, 2023.
