Sudden flood ravages Thame village

KATHMANDU: A sudden flood feared to have been triggered by a glacial lake outburst flooded Thame River and swept Thame village in the Khumbu region of Solukhumbu district on Friday afternoon.

Photos and videos shared on social media platforms show houses submerged in debris flown by the floodwaters.

“There are three glacial lakes above the village. We suspect one of them breached its edge,” said Sujan Kumar Bhudhathoki, chief administration officer of Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality.

Dijan Bhattarai, the spokesperson for the National Disaster Risk Reduction Management Authority, said it is too early to say it is a case of glacial lake outburst flood (GLOF).

Although not on the popular Everest Base Camp trek, Thame is a popular stopover for tourists in the Khumbu Region. It is a starting or ending point of the popular Three Passes trek and is a mere three hours from Namche Bazaar. It is also the birthplace of ace mountaineers like Apa Sherpa and Kami Rita Sherpa.

Thame River meets Imja River below Namche Bazaar to form Dudhkoshi – a major tributary of the Koshi River which flows into the Ganges.

Meanwhile, the Solukhumbu administration has requested people living downstream to maintain caution.
