KATHMANDU: Nepal’s ambassador to the United Nations, Ram Prasad Subedi, has been unanimously elected as the Chairperson of the Committee on Trade and Development (CTD) of the World Trade Organization (WTO).
This is the first time that a Nepali has been elected to the post since Nepal’s accession to the WTO in 2004.
Officials from the Ministry of Industry, Commerce, and Supplies are hopeful that Subedi’s election to the post will help promote Nepal’s economy and trade interests.
Subedi has been elected for a yearlong tenure.
In a statement, the ministry mentioned that it would extend all possible support and cooperation to Subedi for his successful tenure.
The main role of the CTD is to continually review the participation of developing country members in the multilateral trading system. Similarly, it conducts periodic reviews of the application of special provisions in WTO agreements and related ministerial decisions in favor of developing country members—known as special and differential treatment (S&DT) provisions.
